Annie's Place is situated in the centre of the small, coastal village of Palace on the western tip of Mainland, Orkney. The self catering apartment is self contained, and on the ground floor of St Magnus Kirk Manse (built in 1761). Guests rate our shoreline location as ideal for a relaxing and an active seaside Orkney holiday, both locally and further afield.
The flat has good access, and sleeps up to four people in double and twin bedrooms. We are popular with both solo travellers and couples. In Annie's Place there is a well equipped kitchen/ diner, and a modern bathroom with shower over the bath. The cosy sitting room has comfortable leather armchairs and sofa with Wifi, TV, board games, jigsaws and books. The furniture, fittings and bed linen are of excellent quality, as the flat is regularly refurbished and updated. Orkney seascapes by one of Scotland's leading artists, Rosanne Barr, are featured within the flat.
Guests are welcome to sit and relax on our shoreline bench directly above the Birsay Bay sea shore which is alive with birds and "singing seals". Many guests enjoy a lunchtime snack, coffee break or glass of wine whilst relaxing in this "midge free" haven! Wonderful sunsets, long summer evenings, and exciting sea scenes are features of the view from this vantage point. If you are lucky, from the end of August through to March the Aurora Borealis may make an appearance during your stay.
The view from our shoreline wall is included in the Scot's Magazine's July 2025 issue called Island Inspirations. The view is of Birsay Bay and the tidal island of Brough of Birsay; a ten minutes coastal stroll from Annie's Place. In spring and summer its heath land is covered in wild flowers and its cliff faces become seabird "nurseries", including puffin colonies with terns and sand martins also nesting nearby. At all times of year the seaviews are dramatic. Many guests make this their daily walk!
There are many walks and cycle routes along the rugged coastline and country roads that visitors can explore from the doorstep without the need to take the car. The St Magnus Way and Cycle Track pass by the Annie's Place lane. Dog owners are also delighted that Annie's Place has immediate access to wonderful "doggie walks" and the adjacent beach.
Annie's Place is in the centre of Palace Village, ancient capital of Orkney. The ruins of the Earl's Palace Birsay (Robert Stewart - related to Mary Queen of Scots) is the view from our windows across the ancient St Magnus Kirkyard. The RSPB bird sanctuaries at Marwick Head and The Loons are just up the road. Travelling to and from Annie's Place you will drive through the hamlet of Twatt, alongside Boardhouse Loch which has boat hire available for fishing. You will also pass and can visit the historic Barony Mill.
The highly recommended Birsay Bay Tearoom is just a three minute walk up the road from Annie's Place. The village shop, Palace Stores, is next door and provides a wide range of groceries, fruit and vegetables and home made hot food and drinks. Across the kirkyard is the JP Orkney Honesty Box to tempt your taste buds and Oskara Crystals is just next to the shop to tempt you with beautiful crystals, interesting fossils and unusual jewellery.
