From the station at Banavie cross the road bridge over the adjacent Caledonian Canal and turn imediately right onto the B8004. The road passes through a number of houses but leads fairly quickly out into open countryside. After undulating for almost 8 miles with great views across the canal and River Lochy to Ben Nevis take the right fork to drop down a short hill and cross the canal at Gailochy. An alternative, traffic free way of reaching this point is to follow the canal tow path from Banavie.
From Gairlochy the route continues on the B8004, passing the power station at the end of Loch lochy and climbing slightly to reach the Commando Memorial above Spean Bridge. This is a well known viewpoint with views towards Ben Nevis, Aonach Mor and the chain of mountains known as the Grey Corries. At this point the route heads right and joins the main A82 trunk road but a path can be followed alongside it to reach the village of Spean Bridge. Keep right at the bottom of the hill, continuing on the A82 towards Fort William. Although a busy stretch this part only lasts for a mile before a right turn (signposted to Highbridge) leads back onto minor roads.
Continue on the Highbridge road which veers left after a couple of miles and follows the forest edge and the River Lochy southwards. This stretch is parallel to, but in the opposite direction to your outward route along the canal but the lack of any bridges means there are no links between the two. After the road leaves the river behind the route soon rejoins the A82 at Torlundy. Cross the main road with care and just to the right of the junction the cycle route from Nevis Range into Fort William can be joined. Follow this to the roundabout at the entrance to Fort William itself and take a right turn onto the A830 Mallaig road which is followed for a mile back to the start at Banavie.
