This unassuming building next to the Pierowall Hotel provides a fascinating insight into the history, geology and archaeological heritage of Westray. In addition to the permanent exhibition on the island’s human history and flora and fauna, the centre presents a year-long exhibition on a specific local topic. It also boasts an extensive database of churchyards and houses and a growing genealogy section. View the stunning Westray Stone, an impressive Neolithic carving found in an excavated tomb, alongside other historic treasures and search the archive. As part of the Westray’s Living History project, the centre also contains memorabilia relating to the island including artefacts, written records and photographs which date as far back as the 1800s.
