Based on the popular films about Harry Potter, Scotland Traveller presents a new self-drive Harry Potter tour. Starting from Edinburgh, home of author JK Rowling, the tour takes you to places such as Alnwick Castle, Glencoe and Glenfinnan.
JK Rowling has lived in Edinburgh for over twenty years, and you can easily imagine how Edinburgh’s Old Town was part of the inspiration for the Harry Potter books. You can visit The Elephant House cafe where she is said to have written the first volume in the series. Or take afternoon tea at Edinburgh’s most prestigious hotel, the Balmoral Hotel – where the final volume of Harry Potter was completed in one of the suites.
The books and films about Harry Potter are all about magic and fantasy, and when you first see and experience places like Glencoe or Glen Nevis, you can understand why these films couldn’t have been made without including these magical landscapes.
For many, the highlight of the tour will be hopping aboard the old Jacobite Steam Train which runs between Fort William and Mallaig between April and September, and travels over the spectacular Glenfinnan viaduct.
