This is a great walk up Schiehallion (1083m) - "the fairy hill of the Caledonians". There are interesting stories to tell - including measuring the mass of the Earth, contour lines and the Blue Witch. It can also be a great viewpoint.
This is a great walk up Schiehallion (1083m) - a famous Perthshire Munro. There are some interesting stories to tell about the “fairy hill of the Caledonians”, including an early experiment to measure the mass of the Earth, the invention of contour lines, the Blue Witch, the ancient Fingalians and, more recently, ownership by the John Muir Trust. On a good day, the hill can offer great views in all directions. Schiehallion is a special place and to help support its future management, we will donate 50% of our net income from this walk to the John Muir Trust.
The walk follows good paths, but there is a large boulder field near the summit. The meeting point is the Braes of Foss car park (grid reference NN 753 557) at 930am. The walk is 10km with a total ascent of 870m and will take 5-6 hours. The walk reaches a height of 1083m – the temperature and the weather can change a lot between the low valleys and the summit.
You will need to bring with you a pair of good boots or trekking shoes, waterproofs, a small rucksack, some warm spare clothing, walking poles may also be useful, hand sanitiser, a face mask and something to eat and drink. Sorry, but no dogs.
