The Braemar Highland Games Centre explores a living tradition, the Highland games, focusing on the world-famous Braemar Gathering. Dedicated to the history and future preservation of traditional sports, the centre opens March 15th!
Walking through the doors into the gallery space, visitors will see photographs and trophies from games past, before entering the spectacular octagonal exhibition room. The exhibition tells the unique story of the Braemar Gathering and the organisation behind it, the Braemar Royal Highland Society. Founded in 1815, making it the oldest Friendly Society in the country, this group held the first games in Braemar in 1832 - with the tradition dating back many centuries earlier. Through objects, documents and costumes, discover how the Gathering’s continuing link with the Royal Family began with Queen Victoria, learn about Highland games activities such as piping, dancing and heavy events, and see original Highlander uniforms, complete with kilts!
After exploring the history of the Braemar Gathering, why not explore the games park itself? The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park has been the home of the Gathering since 1906. Only a few steps from the doors of the new building, named after Prince Charles’s Scottish title, visitors can sit in the grandstands and imagine the pageantry and competition of the Gathering - and even peep into the Royal Box.
Having worked up an appetite, return to the centre for a warming soup or satisfying sandwich, and maybe treat yourself to a slice of cake from our selection of home bakes. With a menu focusing on Scottish flavours and fresh locally-sourced products, there’s bound to be a tasty treat for everyone. Finish off your visit by picking up a souvenir of your day from our shop, or even by buying tickets to the next Braemar Gathering!
