The full circuit route can be completed in five days or started at any one of its five stages. You will find yourself enamoured with the beautiful areas of farmland, forests and moors. The route consists of old drove roads and old tracks covered by the Caterans, cattle thieves who between the Middle Ages and 17th century raised various places in the area such as Strathardle, Glenshee and Glen Isla. The Cateran cattle thieves are what have given the route its name.
The Cateran Trail also offers a mini trail for walkers who want to spend a weekend or short break experiencing only the best sections of the route. It takes two days to complete and is also in a circuit formation. After completing the 20 miles track, you will reach the stunning village of Kirkmichael.
To avoid getting lost, it is strongly advised that walkers do not stray from the track without a map or a guide book. The Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust website has a shop with a range of guidebooks available which can be purchased via Amazon.co.uk.
