Kilwinning Abbey

The Coig - The Shiel

Founded in the 12th century, Kilwinning Abbey was once home to Tironesian monks who lived here for some 400 years. Come the 16th century, all was not well when the Abbey was targeted and cast down during the Protestant Reformation of 1560. Despite its turbulent past, a surprising amount of the original building remains today. Visitors can still see the south transept, which almost stands at its full height, as well as the south nave wall and impressive west front.
