From the sea

Freshly caught seafood from along the Solway Firth can be found on restaurant menus across Dumfries & Galloway. Look out for succulent salmon or visit a smokehouse to discover distinctive flavours. Visit The Galloway Smokehouse between Newton Stewart and Gatehouse of Fleet to see the traditional process of smoking in action which involves treating the salmon with raw salt, golden syrup and even dark rum. On the outskirts of Newton Stewart itself, look out for the Marrbury Smokehouse who supplied their delicious smoked salmon to the 2005 G8 Summit in Gleneagles.

From the land

The heather-clad hills of Dumfries & Galloway mean give the region's beef, lamb and mutton boast a rich flavour that is sought after across the country. The Blackface Meat Company is just one of the local businesses who rear sheep and cattle on the Galloway hills. For great gamey meats and an extensive range of organic lamb, head for country houses including Craigadam near Kirkcudbright.

The region is also famed for tasty cheeses, ice creams and other dairy products. Loch Arthur Creamery, Caledonian Cheese Company and Galloway Farmhouse Cheese are just some of the local names to look out for.

Moffat Toffee

Enjoy a traditional sweet which has been made in Dumfries & Galloway since the late 1800s. Despite its name, Moffat Toffee is not actually a toffee. The boiled sweet has a caramel flavour on the outside and sharp lemon taste on the inside and is still made to the same traditional Blacklock family recipe. Discover these and many other traditional sweets in the Moffat Toffee Shop in the heart of the town. Wherever you are in Dumfries & Galloway, makes sure to dine in some of the charming local cafes, restaurants and shops where you can enjoy fine dishes created using fresh regional produce.
