Wouldn’t it be amazing if cows could actually produce milk that tasted of whisky? Well, if you’ve noticed the date, you’ll realise that this really is too good to be true and we’ve just been having a bit of fun pulling your leg. Luckily for you, though, there are plenty of great opportunities to try a dram of the finest whisky - without the cows - when you visit Scotland.

Whisky Month

Whisky Month 2014Part of the Year of Homecoming Scotland 2014, Whisky Month is a four-week-long celebration of whisky, with both novices and connoisseurs raising a glass to toast the country’s national drink.

Events are taking place around the world; with World Whisky Day on 17 May, for instance. But there are lots of fantastic events and festivals happening a little closer to home in Scotland.

From Islay off the south-west coast to Speyside in the north-east and everywhere in between, festivals will be combining drams of the best single malts with food, music, culture and more. Feis Ile - Islay Festival of Malt and Music - will definitely be a highlight with ceilidhs, distillery open days, Gaelic lessons and concerts. The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, too, will be blending music and food with activities centred around the region's fifty distilleries.

Going behind the scenes

Strathisla Distillery, MorayEven if you can’t make one of the many whisky events happening across Scotland in May, there are plenty of other ways to discover the real taste of Scotland.

One of the best ways is directly at the source. Why not go behind the scenes to experience the sights and smells of the whisky-making process on a tour of Scotland’s many distilleries? Usually lasting about an hour from start to finish, you’ll be guided through each stage of distillation, often culminating in a dram or a whisky tasting at the bar.

Each distillery is slightly different from the others and each has a different ways of doing things. This only adds to the unique character of the whiskies they produce. Character and flavour also vary between the five whisky-producing regions. Why not take advantage of our whisky itineraries and discover the flavours of each region for yourself? Take to the Malt Whisky Trail,  the only one of its kind in the world, which leads you around some of the most intriguing distilleries in Speyside, including a working cooperage. Or alternatively, head to along the Argyll & The Isles Whisky Trail or explore Scotland’s Whisky Coast.
