From the harbour town of Oban to the colourful Tobermory on Mull and scenically located Inveraray and Tarbert on Loch Fyne, the towns and villages of Argyll & The Isles boast superb attractions, great accommodation and fantastic cafés, restaurants and more.

Oban is a bustling town known as the Gateway to the Isles with ferries departing for the Outer and Inner Hebrides. Lying in a crescent occupying the hills surrounding Oban Bay, the town provides a great range of accommodation, cafés and restaurants, and wide selection of activities and day trips.

Did you also know that Oban has a reputation for being the seafood capital of Scotland, or that it’s known as one of Scotland’s oldest source of single malt whisky, which you can sample for yourself at Oban Distillery?

Across the water from Oban, on Mull, is the picture-postcard town of Tobermory. Famed for the cheerful colours of the waterfront houses, the town was used in the popular children’s television series Balamory making it a fantastic place for a day out with the whole family.

Back on the mainland, overlooking the still waters of Loch Fyne, Inveraray is the traditional county town of Argyll. If you want to explore the region’s glorious gardens, Inveraray is home to a delightful garden at Crarae. Admire the national collection of southern beech trees and the fabulous views looking over Loch Fyne, and uncover the many great historic attractions, including spooky Inveraray Jail and the spectacular Inveraray Castle.

Built around two sheltered bays and home to a charming Victorian pier, visit the town of Dunoon, the main resort on the beautiful Cowal Peninsula. Stroll along the town’s attractive promenade and discover the fascinating selection of arts and crafts shops, galleries and museums, and should you be in the neighbourhood in August, make sure to attend the world-renowned Cowal Highland Gathering. These are the largest Highland games in the world, where you can see dancers compete or even take part in a ceilidh yourself.

Those looking for something a little quieter can explore the selection of charming hamlets and villages which lie across the Kyle of Bute, such as Tighnabruaich and Lochgilphead, or hop on board the classic Waverley Paddle Steamer which calls at various ports here.

Argyll & The Isles is home to 25 inhabited islands, each with their own character. Excellent inter-island ferries make island hopping an exhilarating way to explore some of the region's towns and villages.
