The town of Montrose and the Montrose Basin, Angus
Montrose Basin Visitor Centre
Steeped in history and heritage, Dundee & Angus provides great inspiration to artists. Enjoy the old closes and byways of the medieval town as you explore the many statues in and around Montrose.
With a substantial and growing number of historic and contemporary works of art, Montrose offers a nice collection of works of the highest caliber.
Comprising of 22 sculptures including historical figures, wells and birdlife, the trails take in many of the area’s historical landmarks, from the north side of the town centre down to the harbour giving you a great feel for the character and layout of the town.
One of the stop-off points along the trail is the William Lamb Studio, a permanent exhibition to the Montrose-born sculpture and includes busts of Hugh McDiarmid and the then Princess Elizabeth. Others include Montrose Air Station Museum with a fascinating collection of artefacts and Montrose Basin, a haven for birds and birdlovers.
There are two routes on offer. The inner starts at the Montrose Museum in Panmure Place and is easily accessible by foot. The outer is best viewed by car as the works are on the periphery of the town, but all within few minutes’ drive.
