If you're planning a skiing break or holiday and fancy a day or half day away from the slopes, then choose a ski resort below to find out about other nearby activities and attractions. From whisky distilleries and castles to indoor activity centres, there is plenty to keep you occupied. Please note that opening times vary, so check them before you go.
Nevis Range is located near Fort William, known as the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, so it's not surprising that there is plenty to do both on and off the slopes! Explore the mountain on two wheels and take on the thrilling Witches Trails, which now includes two new routes; the green-graded Cats Eyes Trail and the blue-graded Blue Adder.
Head up the mountain on the gondola and hike to two spectacular viewpoints, or stretch your legs on one of the many trails at Leanachan Forest, situated on the lower slopes of Aonach Mor.
Off the mountain, there are plenty of exhilarating activities to try, from rock climbing and abseiling to paintballing and segways.
Glencoe Mountain offers excellent opportunities for mountain bikers with two downhill routes, ideal for more experienced riders, and cross-country plateau trails which are accessible by chairlift. The single-track plateau trails are suitable for a range of abilities and offer some amazing views of the valley.
There are many things to see and do near Glencoe Mountain, in Kinlochleven to the north there is an excellent range of indoor and outdoor activities at The Ice Factor, including indoor ice climbing.
As well as skiing or boarding, at Lecht 2090 you can experience the sheer delight of snow tubing. The thrill of racing along a downhill course in a large rubber ring is like no other! In the summer months, the Lecht also has two great mountain bike trails to try, or you can race your friends and family on deval karts down the hillside track.
It's possible to enjoy other activities within the area surrounding this ski resort, such as clay pigeon shooting and archery with Craggan Outdoors. From February and right through to December you can go trout fishing at Glen Tanar.
Whilst the mountains at Glenshee Ski Centre may be laden with snow, you may well find that golf courses on lower ground nearby will still be open and snow-free! The area around the resort offers great walking and indoor attractions to visit too.
In the summer months, you can explore the Glenshee Mountain Bike Track by foot or on two wheels. It’s accessible via the Cairnwell chairlift and stretches for 3.2 km, with two uphill sections. Along the way you might spot wildlife such as ptarmigan, mountain hares, red grouse, and red and roe deer.
Sports in the snow needn't be confined to the slopes at CairnGorm Mountain, why not try riding on horseback through white fields at Alvie Stables, or taking a ski tour through the forests with Full on Adventures?
The wild and rugged CairnGorm Mountain is also suitable for mountaineering as well as walking, birdwatching and, for the more experienced, mountain biking.
At nearby Rothiemurchus Estate, there are heaps of activities to try, from 4x4 off road driving and quad trekking to rafting and river tubing – and you can enjoy one of the best picnic spots in Britain.
