Sample the true taste of Edinburgh & The Lothians and discover the freshest local produce at farmers’ markets and farm shops across the region. Whether you’re looking to indulge your sweet tooth or want to pick up the best meat, seasonal fruit and vegetables or dairy produce from the area, there is something for you.

Farmers' markets and farm shops are a regular feature in towns and villages across Scotland and are a fantastic opportunity for local producers to showcase their excellent range of food and drink to the public.

Although farmers' markets are usually held on a monthly basis, the award-winning market in Edinburgh’s Castle Terrace is held weekly and is the largest of its kind in Scotland. It regularly features almost 60 stalls with a mouth-watering selection of delicious produce from the local area and across the country. Look out for everything from organic beef, wild boar and smoked salmon, to freshly baked bread, seasonal berries and much more. Craft beers, homemade wines, fruit juices and local drams are also regularly on sale.

Chat to the stallholders who will be only too happy to share their expert knowledge and give you some tips on how best to cook and serve their produce. The markets are also a great chance to find out a bit more about where the produce came from.

On the second Saturday of the month, the Balerno village market in the south-west of Edinburgh is a popular community event which features food and drink for all the family.

Outwith the city, the fertile lands of the Lothians result in succulent meat and dairy produce. Visit the monthly Haddington Farmers’ Market in East Lothian which focuses on the artisan farms of the region, or check out the excellent markets including Howgate in Midlothian or Linlithgow and Bathgate in the west.

If you can’t make the markets, you can also pick up great local produce from farm and specialist shops such as Hopetoun Farm Shop on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
