Head out of the city with a visit to one of the many beautiful country parks in the Lothian countryside for a fun family day out in the great outdoors.

You don’t need to travel far from Edinburgh city centre before you are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Lothians, home to several country parks. Whether you want a relaxing walk or to take part in fun activities and entertain the kids, the country parks of the Lothians have plenty to offer, and there is always the chance you’ll encounter some wildlife, from herons and roe deer to foxes and otters.

Enjoy a family day out in the great outdoors, just 5 miles from Edinburgh city centre. Dalkeith Country Park has plenty to keep the kids amused from the exciting adventure playground, tree top walkways, rope swings to the famous flying fox zip slide. Meet the resident Highland cows, lambs, piglets and horses or just take time out to relax and enjoy the riverside trails and cycle tracks.

Originally a country estate, Vogrie Country Park retains much of its Victorian character with its sweeping carriage drives, landscaped vistas and walled garden. A great place to enjoy the beautiful Midlothian countryside, Vogrie offers the chance to escape the bustle of city life.

Situated to the south of the historic town of Linlithgow in the beautiful West Lothian countryside, Beecraigs Country Park offers a huge range of activities such as walking, cycling, fly-fishing, rock climbing, canoeing and more. The park also provides a play park for children, a deer park and restaurant. The trails offer a great opportunity to enjoy a refreshing woodland walk.

Once a historic estate, Polkemmet Country Park is now a popular visitor attraction in West Lothian. The park offers beautiful woodland and riverside walks which weave through oak and Scots pine trees, as well as a 9-hole golf course and bowling green. It is also a great place to spot wildlife such as roe deer, foxes, herons, water voles, bats and badger.

Enjoy the beautiful woodland and riverside walks of Almondell & Calderwood Country Park. As you meander under the oak and hazel trees look out for roe deer, herons and otters who make this delightful country park their home. The park also features a visitor centre and an aquarium.
