Coasteering is the seaside equivalent of canyoning. It’s a thrilling activity not for the fainthearted -imagine traversing along cliff-lined coasts and scrambling up and down rocks, inlets and coves as waves crash into the rocks below. Leaping from a cliff, you’ll plunge into the sea, swimming with and against the tide. As well as the exhilaration and the physical exertion, there are other benefits too - sometimes, if you're lucky, you can spot wildlife.

Coasteering is fairly new to these shores, though it's growing in popularity all the time. For safety reasons, this activity is usually done in small, supervised groups – why not try it with your friends or family as part of a fun day out?

As the name suggests, it’s an activity that, most importantly, requires coastline. You’ll find companies providing adventure days out in many regions, and those with access to coastal locations will often offer coasteering.

Based in the west of Scotland, join companies such as Stramash or Vertical Descents on scrambles around the sea cliffs near Oban, on which you’ll find scenic views out to a number of islands.

The recently renovated Raasay House, on the small island of Raasay, near the Isle of Skye, offers coasteering of the rocky outcrops and cliffs on the shoreline in front of an 18th century mansion. Further north, on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, you can head out with Clearwater Paddling to discover the wilder side of this island’s rocky coastline.

In the east of the country, Aberdeen Adventure offers trips to hidden spots of near Cove and Portlethen which make excellent coasteering sites – you are bound to feel invigorated as you jump into the icy depths of the North Sea!
