Category 2 Accessibility Requirements

Wheelchair access with assistance

Accommodation Requirements
All the requirements for Category 3 except as amended below.

Public Entrance

  1. Where there is no ramp, there must be no more than single steps to the entrance.
  2. The entrance door must have a clear opening of not less than 75 cm.

Interior General

  1. There must be no more than single steps, at any one point, in the corridors or to the rooms the disabled guest will be required to use.
  2. Those public passageways that lead to the restaurant or dining room, lounge, TV lounge (unless TV is provided in the bedroom), bar, the disabled guest's bedroom and bathroom (if other than en suite) should not be less than 80 cm wide and not less than 120 cm opposite the doors to the rooms referred to above.
  3. Doors to the rooms referred to above should have a clear opening of not less than 75 cm.
  4. In the restaurant/dining room there must be at least one accessible table with a clear underspace of at least 65 cm high. Blocks, to lift a table when required, are acceptable. Where three or more bedrooms meet the requirements for Category 2 or 1, at least two such accessible tables should be provided.
  5. Where the disabled guest may be required to use a lift, the door should have a clear opening of not less than 75 cm, and the interior of the lift should be not less than 120 cm deep by 80 cm wide.

Bedroom
Only one bedroom need meet these requirements.

  1. There must be unobstructed space of not less than 110 x 70 cm.
  2. There must be space alongside at least one side of the bed of not less than 80 cm to allow for lateral transfer.

Bathroom
Only one bathroom, separate or en suite with the bedroom(s) above need meet these requirements.

  1. There must be an unobstructed interior space, clear of the door swing, of not less than 100 x 70cm.
  2. Where a bath is provided, there must be space alongside of not less than 80cm to allow for lateral transfer.
  3. Where a shower only is provided, it must have: a level entry, i.e. no rim; a lateral transfer space of not less than 80 cm, and a seat.
  4. The washbasin, either within the bathroom or bedroom, must have sufficient clear underspace and/or level taps to enable it to be used by someone in a wheelchair.

WC
Only one WC, separate or en suite with the bedroom(s) above need meet these requirements.

  1. There must be a lateral transfer space to the WC of not less than 80 cm.
  2. The rim of the WC seat must be between 45 - 50 cm above the floor.
  3. There must be a horizontal or angled support rail opposite the transfer space, between 20-30cm above the seat.
  4. If separate from the bathroom, there must be an unobstructed interior space of not less than 110 x 70 cm and a washbasin with clear underspace.

Notes: There can be a succession of single steps, provided there is sufficient space after each step for a wheelchair to sit comfortably and safely, with all four wheels on the ground.

Visitor Attraction Requirements
All the requirements for Category 3 with additions and amendements as below.

Approach

  1. The route to the entrance from the dedicated parking spaces must be no more than 100 m and must have no more than single steps at any one point and no more than 3 such steps per 50 m. Steps may have risers no more than 19 cm, treads no less than 120 cm deep and 75 cm wide. There must be a clear space not less than 360 cm between each step.
  2. Paths, where provided, must not be less than 90 cm wide and passing places not less than 150 cm x 150 cm must be provided at intervals of not less than 25 m.

NB: Category 3 waiver applies, provided the vehicle has a wheelchair lift.

Entrance

  1. The immediate approach to the entrance must consist of no more than 3 single steps with a minimum space of 120 cm between each step.
  2. Where a ramp is present it must be no steeper than 1:12. The steeper gradient of 1:10 for internal ramps less than 1.5 m long is not acceptable.

Facilities

  1. The route to each accessible facility must have no more than single steps at any one point with a minimum space of 120 cm between each step and no more than 3 steps in each 50 m.
  2. The route to each accessible facility must contain no incline or ramp steeper than 1:12. The steeper gradient of 1:10 for internal ramps less than 1.5 m long is not acceptable.
  3. The route to each accessible facility must have corridors or paths (where present) not less than 90 cm wide.
  4. If the attraction contains only one WC, it must be an accessible unisex WC facility.
  5. If the attraction contains more than one WC facility, at least 50% of those on Category 2 access routes must be an accessible unisex WC facility.
  6. Within the accessible WC:

- There must be no more than a single step at the entrance.

- The entrance must not be locked and must have a clear opening width of not less than 75 cm and a clear approach not less than 120 cm deep.

- There must be unobstucted interior space of not less than 110 x 70 cm.

- There must be a lateral transfer space to the WC of not less than 80 cm.

- The rim of the WC seat must be between 45 and 50 cm above the floor.

- A toilet paper dispenser must be within easy reach of the WC.

- There must be a horizontal support rail 65 to 75 cm above the floor on the wall opposite the transfer space and positioned between 40 and 50 cm from the centre of the seat.

- A hinged support rail must be located on the transfer side.

- There must be a washbasin within the WC with clear underspace to allow access to a wheelchair user.

- A soap dispenser must be located within reach of a wheelchair user at the washbasin.

- A hand dryer and/or paper towel dispenser must be within reach of a wheelchair user at the washbasin.

- A light switch must not be more than 140 cm above the floor.

  1. Within the accessible catering outlet and/or bar:

- There must be no more than a single step at the entrance.

- The entrance must have a clear opening width not less than 75 cm and a clear approach not less than 120 cm deep.

- There must be at least 2 plus 1 in 10 accessible tables with a clear underspace at least 70 cm high, 60 cm wide by 45 cm deep.

  1. Within the accessible shop:

- There must be no more than a single step at the entrance.

- The entrance must have a clear opening width not less than 75 cm and a clear approach not less than 120 cm deep.

- Where there are aisles they must be at least 90 cm wide.

Features
All the requirements for Category 3 with additions and amendments as below:

  1. There should be no more than single steps at any one point with a minimum space of 120 cm between each step.
  2. The route to each accessible feature must contain no incline or ramp steeper than 1:12. The steeper gradient of 1:10 for internal ramps less than 1.5 m in length is not acceptable.
  3. There should be no corridors or paths (where present) less than 90 cm wide.
