Itinerary:
Day 1
From Edinburgh or from Glasgow we head first to Stirling, looking out for its famous Castle standing majestically above the town. We can visit the Wallace Monument, and afterwards, Doune Castle, location for the film Monty Python & the Holy Grail. Our lunch stop will be Kilmahog, then time permitting, we’ll make a visit to Rob Roy’s grave at Balquidder before we climb via Tyndrum up to Bridge of Orchy. We can enjoy a walk in the famous valley of Glencoe, scene of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan then we’ll travel towards Fort William, nestling in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain at 1343 metres.
Below the mountain we’ll see the green and beautiful Glen Nevis, location for movies including 'Braveheart' and 'Rob Roy'. We’ll arrive in Fort William early evening.
Day 2
Today we head north into the Great Glen, a geographical fault line characterised by a chain of lochs, including Loch Ness. We’ll drive west towards the mountain peaks of Knoydart, and take a narrow pass through Kintail, travelling by the famous 'Five Sisters' mountains and then on to the stunning Eilean Donan Castle for a visit. We move on to the pretty town of Fort Augustus with its impressive flight of locks and then turn off at Spean Bridge, across country to Loch Laggan and the 900-foot Laggan Dam. Our journey south will take us via Dalwhinnie, where Loch Ericht meets Glen Truim, and finally via Perthshire, possibly with time for a woodland walk at the Hermitage, near Dunkeld, with an evening refreshment stop before returning to Edinburgh via the Forth.
Optional extra: Eilean Donan Castle
