Benbecula

Overview

The small island of Benbecula lies between North and South Uists in the Outer Hebrides.

Benbecula is small, flat, low-lying and dotted with lochs and lochans. It is quite easy to drive straight over it, linked by causeway to its neighbouring Uists. There has long been a military presence on the island, although it is now declining. There is an airport at Balivanich, where there is also the only cash machine on both Benbecula and South Uist. The island is blessed with some cracking beaches, backed sand dunes and the machair typical of the Hebrides.
