Bressay And Noss

Bressay lies east of Lerwick and is just a short ferry trip, while Noss is off the east coast of Bressay and is a paradise for nesting birds.

Bressay is home to around 400 people and has an excellent sheltered harbour which led to Lerwick’s establishment as a major fishing port. From Viking times, Bressay Sound has provided a safe anchorage.

Noss is a tiny island that is a National Nature Reserve with over 100,000 pairs of breeding seabirds. The cliffs at Noup Head are 500 ft high and home to a colossal number of birds. There is also some sheep farming on Noss.

Both Bressay and Noss sport beautiful wild flowers in the summer months.
