With the history of archery thought to date back to Palaeolithic times, it's often considered to be an art or practice more than a sport. Requiring concentration and a steady hand, it’s played competitively and in some countries you can hunt with a bow. You will also find that it is a great activity that families can enjoy together and there are some fantastic locations across Scotland where you can have a go.

There are various different archery disciplines which you can learn including both field archery and longbow archery. Field archery often simulates hunting with a bow and arrow, usually in woodland courses at unmarked distances. In traditional longbow archery, wooden bows of around 6 ft in length are often used. While today it is practised recreationally, it has direct links with military warfare of centuries gone by.

Whatever type of archery you try, you’ll soon discover that there are few things more satisfying than releasing the arrow and watching it fly straight into the target. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it and you'll be surprised at how quickly your skills improve over a one or two hour session.

Whether you are keen to improve your aim or have a bit of friendly competition, there are activity centres offering archery in most parts of the country. Get lessons from the instructors at the Galloway Activity Centre on the banks of Loch Ken or take your aim in the beautiful grounds of the Torridon in Wester Ross, the Highlands.

At the Arran Adventure Company on the Isle of Arran, you can try the field archery with a twist as you work around a specially designed course and keep a score as you go, essentially combing ‘the art of archery with the concept of golf.’
