Get behind the wheel of a 4x4, or perhaps something bigger, and really put your driving skills to the test on an off-road experience. This type of activity is available in many parts of the country and is a great way to explore many of Scotland’s diverse landscapes with a bit of a challenge thrown in. Usually suitable in all weather conditions, off-road driving will give you a taste of the Scottish countryside.

You might tread over difficult terrain of rough forest tracks, down steep slopes, through deep rivers, muddy bogs and rocky hillsides. As well as many designated off-road courses, there are some natural off-road driving sites for you to try too. The rural locations mean often there are great opportunities for spotting wildlife such as red deer and soaring eagles.

With 4x4 activity centres in many part of the country, including Fife, Perthshire, the Scottish Borders, Aberdeenshire, the Highlands and Argyll, you can easily plan an off-road experience during your time in Scotland.

At Highland Safaris in Perthshire, you can get to grips with a landrover yourself on the UK’s highest driving course, or enjoy a wildlife safari with a driver guide, ideal for families. At the Scottish Off Road Driving Centre in Fife, take in splendid panoramic views over Fife, south Perthshire and across the River Forth as you master new skills. After you take on the thrilling 4x4 course at Deeside Activity Park in Aberdeenshire, why not try some of the other fun activities on offer, such as paintballing or archery?

For a truly thrilling military-themed off-road experience, have a go at driving an 18-tonne tank near Auchterhouse, near Dundee. Don some camouflage and carry out your mission on the tank track as you learn to master the controls of a real army tank. For the full tank commander experience, you can fire the artillery gun and even crush a car. Wherever you plan to try off-roading, you’re bound to have an unforgettable time.
