Aberdeen City and Shire is home to some of Scotland’s top salmon rivers. The River Dee is simply the world’s top spring salmon river and the Deveron in Banffshire is one of the most prolific salmon and sea trout rivers in the country. The rivers Don, Ythan and Ugie are also renowned salmon rivers. You will find that fish can be taken throughout the season, with August and September particularly good months. Remember to check your permit before fishing as many of the rivers operate a full catch and release system.
Aberdeen City and Shire offers some exceptional trout fishing with hard fighting wild brown trout found in most of the rivers and lochs across the area. One of the regional highlights is the River Don which is widely considered to be one of the finest brown trout rivers in Europe. You will also find many commercial trout fisheries stocked with rainbow trout. Here you are guaranteed some top-class trout fishing at very accessible prices and many of them are open all year round.
In Aberdeen City and Shire coarse fishing isn’t as popular as sea angling and game fishing. However, in recent years a small number of coarse fisheries have opened at Loch Soy, Aboyne Loch and Pitfour Lake to cater for the coarse angler. Here you can expect to catch carp, roach, bream and pike.
Sea anglers are well catered for in the north east of Scotland with the rugged coastline providing a wealth of wonderful boat and shore fishing opportunities throughout the year. Many of the picturesque harbours across the region have sports fishing boats available to hire where anglers can be taken to popular offshore marks to fish. There is a vast array of species available throughout the year, such as cod, pollack, plaice and bass.
