Fife food & drink trail

From fresh seafood and award-winning pork to crumbly oatcakes and flavoured gin, the Kingdom of Fife offers an abundance of delicious local produce. Sample some of its tastiest products on this two day itinerary around the region’s food hotspots.

Start your day in Scotland’s former capital of Dunfermline, just 15 minutes’ drive north of the Forth Road Bridge. Enjoy a hearty breakfast of baked goods, sandwiches and rich coffee in Reuben’s Café and Wine Store, or stock up on treats by local chocolatiers Hello Chocolate! or flavoured gin by the Fife-based Spencerfield Spirit Company. Nearby Pittencreiff Park is ideal for a morning stroll, and don’t miss the impressive 11th century Dunfermline Palace and Abbey.

Head 15 miles east to Kirkcaldy, where you’ll find several quality restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood from the nearby East Neuk. The Waterfront Restaurant offers an excellent and fairly-priced menu based on local produce, perfectly paired with wonderful sea views. The nearby ruins of Ravenscraig Castle are well worth a visit, and the recently refurbished Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery is an ideal spot for a coffee.

After lunch, head north east and pop into Pillars of Hercules, a charming organic farm shop and café in Falkland, for homemade snacks, sandwiches and lots of vegan and gluten-free options. From April to October, visit Cairnie Fruit Farm near Cupar to stock up on juicy seasonal fruits including strawberries, raspberries and currants. Pick your own berries to take home, enjoy fruit smoothies or ice cream in the tea room, or wind your way through the Mega Maze, a unique labyrinth cut into the farm’s six-acre maize field, open from late July.

In the evening, splash out on an unforgettable dinner at the Michelin-starred Peat Inn just outside Cupar, or carry on to St Andrews for a fantastic selection of restaurants. Try The Doll’s House for traditional Scottish and French cuisine or The Grange Inn, a converted 17th century farmhouse with stone walls, open fires and an excellent menu focusing on quality local produce. Have a nightcap at one of the stylish bars and traditional pubs in the town centre, and be sure to look out for local beers by the St Andrews Brewing Company. 

The historic town of St Andrews offers lots to see and do, from its beautiful botanic gardens to the impressive cliff top ruins of St Andrews Castle – and, of course, its world-famous golf courses. Fill up on a tasty breakfast of rolls or other baked goods at Fisher & Donaldson on Church Street before you play a few holes in the Home of Golf, or pop into Bibi’s Café or Jannettas Gelateria, named Scotland's Best Ice Cream at the Golden Cone Awards 2014, for coffee and a sweet snack to nibble on as you wander the town’s cobbled streets. 

As you’re leaving St Andrews, stop by Balgove Larder on the outskirts of the town. The rustic farm shop and café stocks a wide range of local produce, such as Scottish cheese, crumbly oatcakes, artisan bread and honey from their own hives. The store also opens its own steak barn in the summer, barbequing delicious Scottish beef served with tangy sauces and handcut chips.

Anstruther, approximately half an hour’s drive away, is a quaint seaside town famed for its fish and chips. The famous Anstruther Fish Bar serves fresh Scottish cod, haddock, mackerel and seafood cooked to perfection and has been named UK Fish & Chip Shop of the Year numerous times. After lunch, take a wander through the old-fashioned fishing cottages, or head out on a boat trip to the beautiful Isle of May – look out for puffins, seals and other wildlife. 

Just 15 minutes’ drive from Anstruther, the coastal village of Elie is home to two great golf courses, numerous historic buildings and the Elie Deli, a popular independent store stocking a wide range of local produce including freshly baked bread and Fife’s prize-winning Puddledub Pork. Michelin-starred restaurant Sangster’s is just a few doors down and is the perfect place to treat yourself to a fantastic meal of Scottish and European dishes before you call it a night.
