Arbroath Smokies are haddocks which have been salted and then hot smoked in a whisky barrel over oak chips.  Their rich flavour and golden colour has made them a national delicacy.

Originating from the village of Auchmithie near the coastal town of Arbroath in Angus, the smokie has Protected Regional Indication. This means that to be called an Arbroath Smokie the fish must be smoked within five miles of the town. The harbour front is filled with the tempting smell of smoking fish, why not try some before walking to Arbroath Signal Tower Museum to find out about the area’s maritime history?

Just north of Arbroath lies the town of Forfar which is also known for a savoury snack - the Forfar Bridie. This meat-filled pastry is shaped like a horseshoe and fits easily into the hand; it was once an ideal lunch

The rural areas of Angus and Aberdeenshire are famous for breeding cattle, most notably Aberdeen Angus. Renowned for its rich and tasty flavour, the meat is served in restaurants throughout the region, across the country and around the world.

Another fish dish which comes from the east coast is Cullen Skink, a creamy smoked haddock and potato soup which is now a regular feature on restaurant menus across Scotland. The village of Cullen sits on the Moray Coast in the Highlands and is a popular destination thanks to its excellent beach and local golf.
