Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most historically important sites and was once a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens.

Knights, nobles and foreign ambassadors once flocked to Stirling Castle to revel in its grandeur with its superb sculptures and beautiful gardens.

Today you can meet the costumed characters in the roles of bodyguards, court officials, maids of honour and servants who will welcome you into 16th century life.

Families can have fun in the palace vaults where children can try out activities such as dressing in period costume and playing medieval instruments.

Don’t miss a guided tour with knowledgeable staff who will bring the castle’s infamous characters and history to life in great detail.

Other highlights include the Great Hall, Chapel Royal, Castle Exhibition, Regimental Museum, Great Kitchens, Tapestry Studio and the nearby Argyll’s Lodging.

Stirling Bridge

Whilst en-route to The Wallace Monument we travel by Stirling Old Bridge, the present Stirling Old Bridge was built in the 1400s, replacing a succession of timber bridges.

Undoubtedly the best-known of these was one that stood nearby in the 1290s, when Sir William Wallace and Sir Andrew Moray defeated Edward I’s forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

The bridge also played a part in the Jacobite Rising of 1745, when an arch was removed to forestall Bonnie Prince Charlie’s forces as they marched south.

The bridge today remains one of the best medieval masonry arch bridges in Scotland.

Doune Castle

The formidable Doune Castle was built for the Regent Albany.

The striking keep-gatehouse combines domestic quarters including the splendid Lord’s Hall with its carved oak screen, musicians’ gallery and double fireplace.

This was used as a film location for the BBC production of Ivanhoe and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Doune Castle was also used for the castle known as Winterfell in the pilot of TV series Game of Thrones as well as Castle Leoch in Outlander.

The castle courtyard and cellar, including display, is accessible via a steep, cobbled tunnel.

Visitors can touch a number of stone features, such as the well in the courtyard.

The Kelpies

The worlds largest equine sculptures, located on the Forth & Clyde Canal.

Standing at 100ft tall and weighing more than 300 tonnes each, the magical Kelpies are a man-made wonder and a feat of engineering.

The works of art have become iconic on the landscape, after being modelled on real-life icons of times gone by Clydesdale horses Duke and Baron.

The Kelpies represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges and coalships that shaped the geographical layout of Falkirk.
