Puffin at Sumburgh Head

Puffins & Ponies Tour with Shetland Explorer Tours

No visit to Shetland is complete without meeting our native ponies and spotting our colourful visiting puffins. Have your camera ready! Take in some of the most spectacular scenery in Shetland, before stopping for a bite to eat.

This tour takes you to the South Mainlaind of Shetland. On your way south you will take in beautiful coastal scenery at Fladdabister, and stop at a viewpoint from where you can see the island of Mousa. The main attraction on Mousa is the broch. You will be able to get off the bus to view the island and read the information board.

Staying on the side roads along the west coast you will stop at Rerwick beach. This is a favourite beach with seals so there will probably be an opportunity to get off the bus again and take some pictures.

After this you will re-join the main road again and head south to Sumburgh Head, where you can see many different seabirds during the summer breeding season. The favourite is puffins, and you are almost certain to see them in May, June, and July. And if you have watched the Shetland series with detective Jimmy Perez you may recognise the Sumburgh Hotel, where you will stop for lunch.

Finish your tour with a visit to some friendly Shetland ponies, before heading back to Lerwick.
