Join us aboard the tallship Lady of Avenel as we sail from Orkney along the North Coast, and down the Minch and the Hebrides on a musical voyage of discovery. All welcome - from beginner to expert players; no sailing experience required.
Join us aboard the Lady of Avenel for Sessions and Sail 2022 – Blue Water: Orkney to the Hebrides.
This two-masted, Brigantine-rigged tall ship will be your home for six days as we step aboard in the Orkney Folk Festival town of Stromness and sail along the north coast of Scotland, rounding Cape Wrath and sailing down the Hebrides to Barra.
This trip is aimed at those who want a bit more sailing in the mix, with probably one night-time passage on the way to Barra. (Although in Orkney’s latitudes in early June, ‘night’ is an elusive concept!)
Watch the sun set in the north west, only to rise again four hours later with nothing darker than twilight in between. See the terrain change from the low cliffs of the north coast to the mountains and glens of the west coast; visit superbly remote bays and islands. Arrive in the Hebrides by sea in the same way as did the Vikings and pre-1900s travellers; join in the music scene there with sessions, gatherings and workshops.
The ship will be your base for a voyage of exploration and music with sessions, workshops, sailing and more; throughout the trip we will enjoy locally sourced food, beautifully prepared by our on-board chef.

Sessions and Sail
A project run by Shetland musician and tall ship captain Barry Nisbet since 2018, Sessions and Sail is a voyage, a floating festival of Scotland's traditional music, communities and the sea. Taking place aboard the 31 metre tall ship 'Lady of Avenel', and the 18 metre herring drifter 'Swan', these sailing voyages are aimed at music lovers and players of all abilities. Featuring workshops, music sessions both onboard and ashore, local scenery, stories and history, in 2022 Sessions and Sail voyages will visit Shetland, Orkney and the Hebrides as well as a voyage to Donegal.
