Pilrig Park, Leith

Sunny Leith

Sunny Leith is a journey from central Edinburgh to the north side of the city and the port of Leith, ending up at the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Edinburgh Walks leads this private or small group walk to Leith via Calton Hill and its views over Leith, the Firth of Forth, the Forth Bridges and the Kingdom of Fife. We go down onto the road to Leith visiting the site of the Gallowlee (the city gallows). We then come to the boundary between the City of Edinburgh and the old port town of Leith and visit the atmospheric house that inspired Edinburgh born writer Robert Louis Stevenson.

There are interesting local tales of Harry Potter writer JK Rowling, Trainspotting writer Irvine Welsh and singers The Proclaimers before we reach Leith Links – a 16th century royal golf course, integral to the history of the game. Added to this we see the French, Cromwellian and Jacobite influences on Leith, and ‘Leith sur Mer’ (the recent revivial of the port into a centre of fine dining and entertainment). Finally we reach the end of the walk at The Royal Yacht Britannia (entry fee required).
