Dancing Light Gallery is an new exciting rural art gallery based at Whitmuir the Organic Place. The gallery exhibits and sells original work by local and nationally renowned contemporary artists and applied artists, including paintings, prints, sculpture, photographs, jewellery, glass, ceramics, textiles and wood.
Whitmuir is a small, organic farm in the Scottish Borders about 16 miles south of Edinburgh. We rear cattle, sheep, pigs, hens and turkeys and we produce a wide range of organic vegetables and soft fruit.
As an organic farm we are completely committed to the highest standards of animal welfare. Our pigs spend the summer in family groups in the woods and fields and the winter in a cosy barn with straw bedding with an outdoor run. Our hens are truly free range and can root and scratch around all day.
We can guarantee that our salads aren't washed in chlorine and our vegetables are free of pesticides. The way we grow food leaves the earth in a better or at least as good a state as it was when we started.
Organic crops have a lower carbon footprint because they do not rely on using artificial nitrogen. Our cattle eat nothing but grass, so we lock up carbon in permanent pasture and in the woods we have planted on the farm
We maintain fertility for our vegetables through the use of compost and red clover leys, and for our cereals and silage through careful use of farmyard manure.
Our farm shop - along with the cafe/restaurant and art gallery - forms part of a beautiful new timber-framed building insulated with sheep's wool and powered by renewable energy. The shop is open seven days a week supplying our own fresh meat, vegetables and eggs. We also stock the widest range of organic groceries - everything from Arborio rice and Aduki Beans to Zaytoun Extra Virgin Olive Oil. In addition to your weekly food shop, we have a wide range of ethical gifts - from organic cotton baby clothes to hand-made ointments and creams from Carol McMillan's Cashmere goats herd.
We also sell seeds, plants and garden supplies and are always ready to give encouragement and advice to people starting to grow their own food.
Our licensed cafe/restaurant provides a choice of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes with as much of the produce as possible coming straight from the farm - or you are just as welcome to come in for soup with a freshly-baked roll or a cappuccino and home made scone.
The farm welcomes children, with a safe play area. During the summer there is a daily guided walk round the farm: in the winter guided walks are by arrangement
At Dancing Light Gallery there are changing exhibitions throughout the year where you can find landscape, wildlife and figurative paintings by contemporary artists as well as hand-made original prints and photographs, alongside beautiful sculpture, glass, wood, ceramics and jewellery.
