Flotta: A Hidden Gem

Join us for a special day trip to the island of Flotta where we will explore the island on foot, watching out for all the wonderful wildlife that inhabits the island, including seals, Arctic skuas, damselflies, butterflies and wildflowers.

Our island adventure starts with the ferry crossing from Houton which goes via Lyness on Hoy. From the ferry we will keep an eye out for seabirds and cetaceans.

Once on Flotta, we will explore the naval cinema and plantation, before enjoying a leisurely walk around the island taking in the wartime heritage, beautiful scenery and a variety of wildlife. There are 2 different walk routes that we do depending on the time of year, so as to avoid causing disturbance to breeding birds. Our walk will end back at the pier, ready for the return ferry journey to Houton. Walk length approx 6-8 miles at a leisurely pace.

This is a full day out so please come prepared with a packed lunch and enough food/drink to last you the whole day. Walking boots are recommended and please bring/wear warm, waterproof clothing. Even in summer, there can be a chill to the wind! Please bring your own binoculars if you have them and a camera too.

Monday to Friday – meet at Houton 07.40am and return to Houton at 5.15pm

The price for the day includes the ferry fare.

NB This walk must be booked at least 2 days in advance to allow time to book the ferry.
