Explore Two of Scotland’s Most Haunted Castles1. Dunnottar Castle – Epic History & Spectral Legends

Join us on one of the most scenic Dunnottar Castle tours from Edinburgh, and explore this dramatic clifftop fortress near Stonehaven, once visited by William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots. Perched high above the crashing North Sea, Dunnottar Castle is steeped in Scottish history and paranormal tales.

  • Ghosts of Dunnottar: Look out for the Green Lady in the brewery and the mysterious Scandinavian man near the guardroom.
  • Historic Drama: In 1651, the castle withstood an 8-month siege by Oliver Cromwell’s forces to protect the Honours of Scotland (Crown Jewels).
  • Film Location: Featured in Hamlet and inspired the eerie setting of Braveheart.
Dunnottar is a hidden gem among Scottish castles – hauntingly beautiful and unforgettable.

Dunnottar Castle is not very well-known but it has a fascinating history including visits from William Wallace and Mary, Queen of Scots.

Dunnottar Castle has been the scene of many dramatic chapters in Scotland’s history and is home to several ghosts. A girl dressed in a plaid dress has been seen in the brewery while a Scandinavian-looking man was spotted going into the guardroom.

In 1651, Oliver Cromwell’s army laid siege to the castle for eight months attempting to steal the Scottish Crown Jewels, however the jewels were saved, smuggled out by Mrs Grainger, wife of the minister at Kinnef Kirk – a village a few miles south of Dunnottar. Here they were hidden at the old Parish Church.

Hamlet had scenes filmed at Dunnottar Castle.

Starring: Mel Gibson, Glenn Close, Paul Scofield, Alan Bates, Ian Holm, Helena Bonham Carter, John McEnery
2. Glamis Castle – Royal Connections & Chilling Legends

With a reputation as one of Scotland’s most haunted castles, Glamis Castle has been home to the Bowes-Lyon family since the 14th century and was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

  • Hauntings Galore: Glamis is said to have nine different ghosts, including the Grey Lady and the Monster of Glamis.
  • Shakespeare’s Macbeth: The castle inspired one of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedies.
  • Royal Heritage: Princess Margaret was born here in 1930.

Glamis Castle is the home of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne . Glamis Castle has been the home of the Lyon family since the 14th century .

With no less than 9 ghosts, Glamis Castle is one of Scotland’s most haunted castles . Glamis Castle is a Scottish castle said to have inspired Shakespear’s Macbeth but also Royal connections, as before it was granted to the Lyon family in the 14th Century, it was in the hands of Scottish Royalty.

The Queen Mother was born in 1900 as Elizabeth Bowes Lyon. She spent a great deal of her childhood at Glamis Castle. Her second child, Princess Margaret, was born at the Castle on August 21, 1930. Glamis Castle was remodelled in the 17th century to look like it does today.
