This exclusive car tour takes you through the remote landscapes south of Ullapool to Lael Forest and back with a detour to Clachan. At the halfway point we have time for an extended stop at Lael where you can explore the Forest Gardens and discover giant trees and Sir John Fowler’s achievements. At various stops you will learn about the fishing heritage of Lochbroom, clearances, crofting life, the lost townships of Inverlael and Balblair, emigration to Canada and much more. Our knowledgeable guides will paint a vivid picture of the history, the people and their stories.

Discover how a small bridge in Lochbroom was engineered as the blueprint for the famous Forth Rail Bridge.

Empathise with the poor crofters who were evicted from their houses by the lairds to clear the land and make room for sheep.

Listen to the story of fishermen, faced with vanishing fish shoals, poverty and fear of Cholera, destroying lucrative fish traps on the shore.

Wonder why a congregation left their home village and followed a committed preacher on a ship to the New World.

Stroll through Lael Forest Garden where history and nature meet: Admire the huge trees and find out all about the Victorian Seed Hunters and their dangerous expeditions to collect seeds.

Uncover two forgotten townships with thriving communities and an illicit whisky distillery.

Hear how a local minister stood up for his people and saved some men from being deported to the colonies after the Jacobite rising.

Learn how a wall on a Munro is connected to crofters nearly starving during the Potato Famine in the middle of the 19th century.

Old photographs will enhance your experience, enabling you to imagine the past and the lives of the local people.
