Lunga (Treshnish Isles)

Take the chance to see some of Scotland's incredible wildlife on this unique trip to Lunga, one of the Treshnish Isles. Spend time ashore and observe the over 6,000 birds that Lunga hosts.

Meet your skipper at Scarinish Pier, put on your life jacket, and then hop aboard your state-of-the-art RIB for your three-hour tour. Sit back, clutch the rail, and zip over the water — reaching speeds of up to 21 miles per hour (25 knots) — as your skipper navigates the boat east of Tiree before landing on the uninhabited island of Lunga. Spend an hour and a half ashore there (weather permitting) and enjoy close-up, unobstructed views of the most varied and accessible seabird colonies in the Western Isles. Lunga has over 6000 birds including razorbill, kittiwake, fulmar, great skua and not forgetting the majestic puffin.

The Treshnish Isles lie 12 miles from Tiree and are currently designated as a site of special interest and a special protection area for the conservation of wild birds. Because of the sensitive nature of the ecosystem, please do take the time to read the information below.

Visiting Lunga

Lunga, the main island of the Treshnish, is a bird reserve. Please treat it with respect. By stepping onto this island you are intruding into the lives of other creatures. Please do not encroach within 10 metres of the birds. Stay on the paths and away from areas where there are puffin burrows because you will cause them to collapse, possibly trapping young birds or adults inside.

  • DO take all your litter home.
  • DO NOT disturb or approach the wildlife, particularly during the breeding season.
  • DO sit and wait for a while – it is often possible to gain a more rewarding view of the wildlife.
  • DO NOT climb on old walls or move stones. This can damage a valuable archaeological site.
  • DO avoid the cliff edges and wet grass on steep slopes.
  • DO NOT bring dogs (unless assistance dogs) or any pets onto the islands.
