West Bow, Edinburgh

Old Town, New Town

Old Town, New Town takes in the sights of the medieval Old Town and the splendour of the Georgian New Town.

Edinburgh Walks leads this private or small group walk from under the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle to the site of the medieval city’s walls. Then onto the churchyard of Greyfriars, gifted to the city by Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century and a haunt of the Harry Potter story by JK Rowling though more traditionally known for the story of Greyfriars Bobby. We then walk to the historic Royal Mile and visit some Closes, Alleys and Wynds before there's time to visit interesting and artisan shops leading to the Grassmarket, where many of Edinburgh’s criminals came to a grizzly end.

From the West End we enter the preserved architectural masterpiece that is the Georgian New Town, covering an area larger than those of York, Chester, Bath and Chichester added together – with helpful information on inventors, military and political leaders, scientists and physicians as well as literary and philanthropic greats that were resident here in the past. Then back in time to the 12th century to visit the Water of Leith and the charming Dean Village.
