Step into Outlander’s world at five filming locations, from Blackness Castle to Lallybroch, with Scottish history along the way and no more than 16 travellers.

Recognise that castle, that village square, that approach to Lallybroch? On this Outlander filming locations day tour from Edinburgh, visit the real places behind Claire and Jamie’s story, beginning at Blackness Castle, which became Fort William on screen.

Walk the cobbled streets of Culross, Outlander’s Cranesmuir, then find 1940s Inverness in Falkland, with time for lunch around the village. Continue to Dysart Harbour, transformed into Le Havre, before heading to Midhope Castle for the familiar exterior of Jamie’s family home, when estate access allows. Your expert guide shares filming stories alongside the real history of these Scottish places, with time to explore on foot and find the views you remember. Castle admissions are separate, and Midhope’s interior is not open to visitors.

Itinerary

Blackness Castle — Fort William — Firth of Forth · Fortress walls · Military history

Leave Edinburgh for Blackness Castle, the formidable 15th-century fortress transformed into Fort William for Outlander. Explore its atmospheric fortifications, recognise locations from some of the series’ most dramatic scenes and discover the castle’s real military history beside the Firth of Forth.

Blackness Castle admission is not included in the tour price and is paid separately.

Culross — Cranesmuir — Cobbled streets · Historic village · Geillis Duncan

Continue to Culross, one of Scotland’s best-preserved historic villages and the screen setting for Cranesmuir.

Walk its cobbled streets, recognise the world of Geillis Duncan and learn how the real 17th-century village was transformed for filming.

Falkland — 1940s Inverness — Village square · Familiar buildings · Lunch

Travel to Falkland, used as Inverness in the 1940s scenes at the beginning of Claire’s story.

Find familiar buildings around the village square, then buy lunch in one of Falkland’s cafés or traditional pubs.

Dysart Harbour — Le Havre — Fife coast · Historic harbour · France on screen

Head to the Fife coast and Dysart Harbour, the historic setting used to portray the French port of Le Havre.

Explore the harbour and see how this small Scottish coastal village became part of Claire and Jamie’s story in France.

Midhope Castle — Lallybroch — Hopetoun Estate · Famous approach · Back to Edinburgh

Finish at Midhope Castle on the Hopetoun Estate, instantly recognisable as Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home. The interior is derelict and closed, but when the estate is open you can see the exterior and walk up the famous approach.

Midhope admission is not included, and access can be restricted by estate activity, filming, farming or events. Back in Edinburgh at approximately 4:20pm, depending on traffic and conditions.

The itinerary is a guide and individual stops or timings may change because of attraction access, estate operations, filming, weather, road conditions or other circumstances.
