Polish Tour of Fife
Free self-guided online tour of Fife visiting locations associated with Poland.
During the Second World War, the exiled Polish army was deployed in the coastal defence of Fife and also established a training base in the area for a newly formed parachute brigade. Visit our website on your mobile device, follow the directions given for the route round the region, explore the locations with Polish connections and discover their significance.
The circular tour begins and ends at the Queensferry Crossing bridge north of Edinburgh and includes:
- Kirkcaldy – with a Polish Club and a memorial to a wartime massacre
- Leven – with memorials to Polish paratroopers deployed in the battle of Arnhem
- Lower Largo – with a memorial to a Polish commander honouring contribution to the Allied war effort
- Elie and Earlsferry – with a Polish paratroopers’ plaque in gratitude to local community
- St Andrews – with a Polish mosaic in thanks to the town, a bust of a general and the celebration of a life-saving inventor
- Cupar – recalling a bugle call with links to Poland
- Falkland – with a Polish word on a war memorial and a gift in gratitude for local support
- Rosyth – remembering a heroic Polish submarine
The motoring tour is approximately 100 miles or 160 kilometres long, with suggested routes between the places of interest.
For visitors travelling into the Highlands there is a further location - beyond Fife:
- Perth – with 300 Polish war graves, a plaque expressing gratitude for wartime support and a relief marking the twinning with a Polish city
