Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness

Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands

Immerse in Scotland's charm and be captivated by Loch Ness's mystery. Get ready to delve into Glencoe's dramatic landscapes and stories of bloody massacres. We will also visit Urquhart castle or Fort Augustus and marvel at the picturesque Highlands.

You depart from Glasgow and travel north towards the 'Bonnie, Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond', Scotland's largest loch by area at 71km2( 27mi2). You will get the chance to stop and have a light refreshment, so if you haven't quite woken up yet and you've still got a "sleepy heid oan yae" you can grab a coffee to wake you up and a bite to eat.

Once we are back on the road we will continue further into the great Scottish highlands travelling through Rannoch Moor with it's breath-taking lochs towards Glencoe where you will see the majestic mountains, haunting glens and learn about its dark history. One of the most famous mountains in the area is Buachaille Etive Mor standing at 3351ft (1021m). Just wait 'til you see it in person - the scenery is out of this world!

Just after Glencoe we will arrive in Fort William. Famous for having the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis stands at 1345m (4413ft) and provides a magnificent backdrop to the town.

Beyond Fort William, we continue to the Great Glen, a natural fault line that divides Scotland from south west to north east that is 62 miles long! It is here that the famous Caledonian canal sits, It was in 1803 that the canal work started and was completed in 1822, 19 years later. It made it possible for boats to get to the other side of Scotland without having to go the long way round the top of Scotland through the treacherous Pentland Firth.

Up the Caledonian canal, you will find a series of lochs connected to each other. One of the lochs is the famous Loch Ness which is the largest loch in Scotland (and Britain) by water volume, it's deepest point is a staggering 230m deep!

Arriving in Fort Augustus, you will learn a small part of its history and we will stop for lunch. Here there is the option to go on an hour-long boat ride from Fort Augustus onto Loch Ness and look for "NESSIE" the most famous monster in Scotland whist having your lunch onboard. If you don't want to go on the boat trip you can spend the time exploring Fort Augustus.

We also have the choice to drive through Fort Augustus and go to the 3rd most visited castle in Scotland ,Urquhart castle. There is a cafe up there where we can stop and have lunch, therefor making it your choice where you would like to stop for lunch.

After our lunch stop we will continue north up the length of Loch Ness towards Inverness, giving you more time to spot NESSIE. We will drive past Inverness castle which was built in 1836, quite a modern castle compared to others in Scotland.

From Inverness we will then travel southbound towards Glasgow passing through Cairngorms National Park, the biggest National park in Britain. It has 5 of the 6 highest mountains in the UK in the park, the highest being Ben Macdui at 1309m (4295ft).

We will take another break in the Victorian town of Pitlochry for refreshments.

Continuing south we travel back to Glasgow in which we will pass the famous Stirling Castle and the Wallace monument which is up on a hill that over looks the site where William Wallace, Scotland's National Hero, won the Battle of Stirling Bridge which took place in 1297.

We will now return to Glasgow where the tour ends.

You can ask your guide for information on our other exciting tours we have to offer.

*There is also a choice to drive through Fort Augustus without stopping and go to Urquhart Castle instead for a lunch stop.
