North Coast 500

The North Coast 500 (NC500) offers never-ending back roads, wide meandering country tracks and beautiful bends through some of Scotland's finest coastal scenery.

What is the North Coast 500?

Dunnet Bay

Often described as 'Scotland's Route 66', the North Coast 500 (NC500) is a 516-mile scenic driving route around the north of Scotland.

You'll start your journey in the northern city of Inverness, weaving along the west coast to Applecross then northwards towards the towns of Torridon and Ullapool. From there, you'll venture to some of the most northerly coastal points in Scotland, passing by Caithness and John o' Groats before heading south again through Dingwall and finally back to Inverness.

Top tips

  • Allow 5-7 days or more to enjoy the route in all its glory.
  • Book accommodation well in advance - make sure you consider camping as an option.
  • You can drive, cycle or even walk this route.
  • Drive carefully on single-track roads.
  • Fuel up regularly in remote areas.
  • Dowload offline maps or buy a physical one.
  • Pack for changing weather.
  • Use designated parking and camping areas only.

John o’ Groats signpost

Inverness

Known as the gateway to the NC500, Inverness offers a good mix of history, scenery and a lively city atmosphere. Explore the castle, take a stroll along the River Ness or visit nearby Loch Ness to uncover tales of its famous mythical legend, Nessie. There are also plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to help refuel your energy levels as you embark on your adventure around the north of Scotland.

Bealach na Bà (Applecross Pass)

This iconic mountain pass will leave you on the edge of your seat with tight hairpin bends and incredible views across the Highlands and towards the Isle of Skye.

Smoo Cave (Durness) 

The enormous sea cave offers a dramatic entrance. Inside, you can see the cascading waterfall, enjoy coastal views and in summer, take a boat trip into the cave for a more adventurous experience.

The lovely village of Ullapool is a great place to relax and unwind while admiring the harbour views. Try fresh local seafood, wander along the waterfront or set up base here to explore beautiful nearby beaches, mountains and scenic drives.
