Begin at Craigmillar Castle, a stand-in for Ardsmuir Prison, before heading to Linlithgow Palace, the chilling backdrop for Wentworth Prison. Wander the cobbled streets of Culross, transformed into Cranesmuir, and explore its 17th-century gardens and preserved townhouses.
Visit Doune Castle, the imposing fortress that doubled as Castle Leoch, and imagine clan life in the Highlands. Pause at Falkland, where the 1940s scenes were filmed, and spot the familiar fountain where Claire first glimpses the ghost of Jamie. 🗺️ Itinerary
1. Craigmillar Castle (45 mins)
Start the day at this atmospheric ruin just outside Edinburgh, used as Ardsmuir Prison in Season 3. Explore its towers and hidden chambers while learning about its real-life royal intrigue.
2. Linlithgow Palace (1 hr)
This majestic ruin served as Wentworth Prison in the series. Wander through its grand halls and imagine Jamie's harrowing scenes. Optional guided walk through the palace grounds.
3. Culross (1 hr)
Step into Cranesmuir, Geillis Duncan's home village. Stroll the cobbled lanes, visit the herb garden behind Culross Palace, and see the iconic Mercat Cross. A highlight for fans of Season 1.
4. Doune Castle (1 hr)
Castle Leoch, home of Clan MacKenzie. Explore the great hall and battlements, and hear tales of clan life and filming anecdotes. Audio guides available with Sam Heughan's narration.
5. Falkland (Lunch & Exploration – 1.5 hrs)
Enjoy lunch in this charming village, which doubled as 1940s Inverness. Visit the fountain where Claire first sees Jamie's ghost and browse local shops for Outlander souvenirs.
6. Midhope Castle (Photo Stop – 30 mins)
Finish with a visit to Lallybroch, Jamie's family home. Though not open inside, the exterior offers a perfect photo op and emotional finale to the day.
7. Return to Edinburgh (1 hr)
Arrive back around 6:00 PM, with hearts full of Highland romance and camera rolls brimming with memories.
