The Pass of Glencoe
Glencoe
Explore the dramatic valley and towering mountains of Glen Coe, a place of unrivalled natural beauty and haunting stories.
Experience Glencoe
Glen Coe is, without a doubt, one of the most majestic landscapes in the world. The deep valley cuts through the rugged Highland landscape in the west of Scotland, bridging the distance between the windswept wilderness of Rannoch Moor in the east and the village of Glencoe on the banks of Loch Leven in the west.
Walks and hikes
The wild beauty of Glen Coe is best explored on foot. The eight Munros in the area make it a hiker’s dream, but you don’t have to climb the highest peaks overlooking the glen to have an unforgettable experience as there are many shorter and less challenging trails that reveal amazing views and hidden treasures. Just remember that even easier walks can take you into remote areas and require sturdy footwear.
Short walks: the Glencoe Lochan trails
Choose from three waymarked trails of varying difficulty in the unusual woodland surrounding the idyllic Glencoe Lochan at the western end of Glen Coe. The trees you will find here originate from North America and were planted in the late 19th century to help the Canadian wife of Lord Strathcona feel more at home. Walk among the towering conifers, breathe in the fresh air carrying the scent of pines and admire the reflection of the trees and the Pap of Glencoe on the tranquil surface of the quiet lochan.

Moderate walk: the Lost Valley
This popular but rough walk offers you a rare chance to uncover the secrets hiding behind the mountains flanking the valley. Follow the sounds of rushing waterfalls uphill past the birch trees lining the rocky path into the narrow gorge, until you reach a hidden valley stretching out before you. It is said that centuries ago, members of Clan MacDonald used this secret place to hide stolen cattle. Hear the gravel crunch underfoot as you explore the flat expanse surrounded by steep slopes and enjoy the serenity of a place hidden away from the rest of the world.
Hard walk: Meall Dearg
For anyone planning to bag a Munro while visiting Glen Coe, this is a fantastic walk on the northern side of the valley, offering a route to the top that avoids scrambling. Boggy stretches, burns meandering through the impressive landscape and steep ascents challenge you on the way up, but the sense of achievement as you reach the summit is made even more rewarding by the incredible views unfolding around you. Let your eyes travel along the ragged Aonach Eagach ridge and over distant lochs, neighbouring mountains and the glen down below, inviting you to take a moment to pause and fully appreciate this ancient landscape.
