Deriving its name from the patron saint of Ireland, who reputedly sailed to the Emerald Isle from here, Portpatrick is one of the most picturesque ports in Scotland. The harbour is still the focal point of the village, sustaining a small fishing industry whilst it is also used to moor recreational craft. Sea angling is a popular pastime with many visitors, and there is also the opportunity to try river and loch fishing. If you enjoy smoked produce, visit the Colfin Smokehouse, about three miles away, for a real taste of Scotland.
Dumfries and Galloway has lots to offer families with some excellent places to visit that are fun for parents and children alike.
The surrounding area is a gardeners dream. Since the climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream, there are several renowned gardens nearby. These include Castle Kennedy, Ardwell, Glenwhan and possibly the best known, Logan Botanical Gardens which exhibits many exotic trees and plants.
