Treshnish Isles
Puffin & Wildlife Tour
A full day adventure to the Treshnish Isles on the west side of Mull to visit the seabird colony. Home to over 3000 puffins, razorbills, guillemots and fulmars to name a few! On the journey we have chance to see whales, dolphins, seals and eagles.
Our Puffin tour is very popular, the only downside is that people don’t want to leave! The island is part of the Treshnish Isles Special Area of Conservation which is a highly important area for seabirds. There are thousands of birds which call the island home during the summer, making this an unforgettable place to visit.
Around the cliffs of the island there are numerous burrows where the puffins are nesting, later in the season you can sometimes spot the hatched pufflings (baby puffins) poke their head out for a look! During the tour we are able to get a close look at the charismatic puffins as they go about their day, surrounded by thousands of other seabirds. As a team of conservationists we always ensure that we don't go too close or disturb the birds.
Lunga is a photographer's dream with the unique landscape of the Treshnish Isles, wildlife, and backdrop of wildflowers. Puffins only land for a few seconds before heading into their burrows when they have fish and capturing this is on most photographers bucket lists, a challenging but rewarding task! Puffins form pair bonds heading back to the island around early May each year and stay until the start of August before departing to spend the winter at sea.
We always have an expert guide onboard who will keep a sharp eye out for wildlife and accompany you on the island. Landings will be via small dingy so a basic level of fitness is required to hop on and off the boat. We would advise you to wear sturdy footwear for the island landing as there are loose rocks when disembarking.
Reaching the island from Oban is a long day, approx 90 nautical miles (~160km), we offer small group numbers and a personalised service guided by experienced marine scientists to get the best out of your day. This tour does depend on a minimum number of participants and weather, pick up in Tobermory is also an option.
