Our business is called Soul of Scotland Tours and it is a ministry of our charitable company called Christian Heritage Edinburgh. We offer walking tours and day trips in and around Edinburgh with Christian and historical themes.
Soul of Scotland Tours is a family tour business that specialises in telling the extraordinary story of Edinburgh’s Christian heritage, and we cater for groups and individuals who are on a pilgrimage here. We also seek to convey the mystery, beauty and soul of Scotland and offer tours with a unique blend of history, culture, castles and landscapes less than an hour’s drive from the capital.
At this stage we offer four tours:
The Christian Heritage Tour
This two hour walking tour on the Royal Mile brings out the Christian history that has shaped Scotland and the world. The tour guide, a local writer, actor and storyteller, brings the history to life as we learn about the Celtic saints, John Knox and the Reformation, the Covenanters and many more. This story is told on the sites of famous buildings, such as Magdalen Chapel, the cradle of the Scottish Reformation, Greyfriars’ Kirk, St Columba’s Free Church, St Giles’, the Martyrs’ Monument and Memorial and in the beautiful Presbytery Hall where we discover some extraordinary treasures.
The Celtic Tour
This walking tour on the Royal Mile is a reduced version of the Christian Heritage Tour, lasting for about 90 minutes, and it is seasonal, operating out of the Christian Heritage Centre between June and September.
The Mystery Tour
Gilmerton Cove is one of the best kept secrets in Edinburgh; a mystery which scholars have yet to solve. Beneath a 19th century cottage lies a network of seven chambers hewn out of the rock, with stone tables and benches. Who used them? A blacksmith’s family, witch covens, illegal drinking clubs, Freemasons, the Knights Templar, or persecuted Covenanters? Can you solve the mystery? Story-telling by our guide brings the history alive in this atmospheric place. This tour is combined with visits to Craigmillar and Roslin Castles, and Rosslyn Chapel, as we pursue our theme of mystery, and includes lunch in the quaint village of Lasswade.
The Medieval Tour
Imagine being transported back to the medieval period, dining in a castle, and listening to a medieval troupe that portrays the history of the castle and Edinburgh through dramatized story-telling, accompanied by song and harp. Enjoy seeing a golden eagle close up after your meal and exploring the beauty and mysteries of Newbattle Abbey, Rosslyn Chapel and Roslin Castle.
