Only a short distance from Edinburgh, it is certainly no ordinary town with its spectacular scenery, shopping, cafés, events and outdoors activities to keep you entertained all year long. You wouldn't be the first to feel inspired by the artsy town, with many notable residents including John Buchan, the Scottish novelist, choosing to make their home here.

Things to do in Peebles

Plod on

You can't put a foot wrong in Peebles, with so many different walks to choose from. Wander in the footsteps of a Borders legend along the John Buchan Way and take in the favourite beauty spots of the author of The Thirty-Nine Steps. Or, you can amble your way from Peebles to Glentress Forest, before coming back along the Tweed.

History corner

Peebles is bursting with tales from the past, not to mention picturesque architecture and fine buildings everywhere you look. Some of these are even thought to date back to the 11th century. The town is full of relics from times gone by, including an old Mercat Cross and the ruined Cross Kirk.

John Buchan Story

This centre tells the fascinating story of John Buchan, in amongst the beautiful Scottish Borders countryside that he loved and was inspired by.

Hooking a catch in one of the world's best salmon rivers should be a priority for all fishing fanatics on the River Tweed.

Mountain biking

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try out some of the heart-pumping mountain-biking trails at Glentress Forest, one of Scotland's 7stanes. People travel for miles to try out these routes, and there are trails to suit all levels, as well as tuition and equipment available.

You're bound to feel inspired around Peebles, with several art galleries, craft shops and studios displaying work from talented locals. Don't miss a trip to the Tweeddale Museum & Gallery for a changing programme of exhibitions and events.

Travel in Peebles

The easiest way to travel to Peebles is by car, as it only takes around 30 minutes from Edinburgh and around an hour from Glasgow. Or, you can catch the First Bus from Edinburgh city centre to Peebles, which takes an hour and is a lovely scenic drive.
