A Guide to midges & ticks in Scotland

Helpful tips and frequently asked questions about midges and ticks in Scotland

What are midges and ticks?

Midges

Midges are tiny flying insects, around 1–3 mm long, commonly found across Scotland and the UK in summer. They can bite and cause small, itchy marks, but they don’t spread disease.

Ticks

Ticks are small, spider-like creatures found mainly in grassy and wooded areas. They can attach to your skin and bite, but taking a few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of problems.

Midges and ticks are manageable and shouldn’t put you off enjoying Scotland’s outdoors.

Simple ways to avoid bites

Check out these quick tips to help you stay comfortable outdoors.

Check conditions before you go

Midge activity can change daily depending on conditions such as wind and humidity. Check the midge forecast before heading out to help plan your day.

Wear the right clothing to avoid ticks

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers
  • Choose light-coloured fabrics
  • Wear long socks and tuck trousers into them when walking through long grass
  • Consider trouser clips or gaiters in areas where ticks may be present

Use insect repellent

  • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin
  • Look for a product designed to protect against midges
  • Reapply as directed, especially after rain or sweating

Avoid peak midge times and places

  • Midges are often most active around dawn and dusk and in still, damp conditions
  • You’re more likely to encounter them in places such as woodland and around water

Check for ticks after being outdoors

After spending time in grassy, wooded or moorland areas:

  • Check yourself and your clothing for ticks
  • Remove any ticks promptly and safely if you find one
  • Check your pets too, if they’re joining you on your trip!

Pack a handy outdoor kit

If you’re heading outdoors, it can help to bring:

  • Midge repellent
  • Lightweight long layers
  • A head net, particularly for areas with lots of midges
  • A tick removal tool
  • Something suitable for soothing itchy bites

FAQs about midges & ticks

What do midge bites look like?

Small, red bumps that may be itchy or slightly swollen.

When is midge season in Scotland?

Midges are active from May to October, with peak activity in the middle of summer. Early morning and evenings, especially on calm, overcast days are the worse time.

Are midges more common in certain areas of Scotland?

Yes, they are mainly found in the west Highlands, islands and damp rural areas.

What should I do if I get bitten by a tick?

Ticks are commonly found in long grass, woodland and rural areas, especially during the warmer months. If you get bitten by a tick, remove it as soon as possible using a proper tick-removal tool, then clean the area. Keep an eye on the bite for a few weeks afterwards. Most tick bites are harmless, but some ticks can transmit Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that requires medical treatment.
