FAQs

Is mountain biking allowed in Scotland?

Yes, thanks to the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, you can pretty much cycle anywhere in Scotland. Just make sure to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. This applies to forests, hills, moorland, tracks, paths, and many estates.

Do I need to be experienced to go on a mountain bike holiday?

No, mountain bike holidays are suitable for all abilities. They range from:

  • Beginner – gentle trails, instruction, confidence building rides
  • Intermediate – flowing singletrack, longer days with varied terrain
  • Advanced – technical descents, steeper gradients, and more remote riding

Who provides mountain bike holidays in Scotland?

You’ll find several mountain bike holiday providers covering guided, self-guided, and bespoke experiences across the country.

What type of bike do I need?

This entirely depends on what type of holiday you’re looking for:

  • Trail holidays – hardtail or full-suspension MTB
  • Alpine or downhill trips – full suspension bike
  • Mixed terrain/long-distance – trail or down-country bike
  • E-bike holidays – pedal-assist only

Is bike hire included?

Sometimes, but it’s not always guaranteed. Make sure to also check with your holiday provider if helmets and pads are included or whether you need to bring your own.

Where can I go mountain biking?

There are lots of options to suit everyone from first timers to experienced riders looking for big challenges. These include:

  • Purpose-built trail centres (e.g. Glentress, Laggan Wolftrax, 7stanes)
  • Forests roads and tracks
  • Natural singletrack in mountains in glens, only if you’re more of an experienced rider.

Please remember that access to these routes can be impacted by weather and infrastructure improvements. Make sure to check out the route information in the days leading up to your trip.

Where is mountain biking prohibited?

It is advised not to cycle in the following locations:

  • Private gardens and houses
  • Farmyards
  • Fields with growing crops
  • Paid attractions (unless cycling is allowed)

What do trail grades mean in Scotland?

Most trail centres use a colour grading scheme which highlight the difficulty of the route.

  • Green – easy, family-friendly
  • Blue – moderate – flowing trails
  • Red – technical, physically demanding
  • Black/orange – expert-level, steep and exposed

Do I need to give way to walkers?

Yes, during your ride you’ll need to give way to walkers and horse riders. Either slow down or briefly dismount from your bike.

What’s the best time of year to go mountain biking in Scotland?

Spring and summer are often considered the best times to go mountain biking in Scotland. Longer daylight hours, milder temperatures and generally drier trails make it easier to spend more time exploring the country's world-class riding destinations. In spring, forests and glens come alive with fresh greenery and colourful wildflowers, while summer brings warm days and spectacular views across Scotland's mountains, lochs and coastlines.

Are e-mountain bikes allowed?

Yes, e-bikes have the same access rights as standard bikes.

Do I need special equipment or insurance?

You will only need insurance if you’re riding in technical or remote terrain. If you’re planning a mountain biking holiday soon, we recommend you bring the following items:

  • Helmet
  • Repair kit, tools, spare clothing layers
  • Map or GPS – remote areas often lack phone signal

Can I combine mountain biking with wild camping?

Yes, you can combine mountain biking with wild camping in Scotland, making it easy to explore remote areas over multiple days. If you plan to wild camp, be sure to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code by camping responsibly in small numbers, choosing locations well away from buildings, roads and farmland, and leaving no trace of your visit. By respecting the land, local communities and wildlife, you can help protect these incredible places for future adventurers while enjoying an unforgettable experience in Scotland's great outdoors.
