Mary Königin der Schotten

Mary Queen of Scots hatte ein kurzes, sehr tragisches Leben, nichtsdestotrotz ist sie die Monarchin, die ihr Land exzessiv bereist hat. Wir bieten individuelle Tagestouren an. Es besteht aber auch die Möglichkeit, längere Touren zu buchen.

Mary Stuart ist möglicherweise die meist beschriebene Persönlichkeit in der schottischen Geschichte und wo immer Sie sich in Schottland aufhalten, ist es wahrscleinlich, dass sich Ihre und Mary's Wege kreuzen. Ihr kurzes Leben was tragisch. Sie wurde am 8. Dezember 1542 als einziges legitimes Kind von James V in Linlithgow Palast geboren. Ihr Vater starb nur einige Tage später.

Ihre Mutter regierte Schottland im Auftrag von Mary. Man brachte Mary zu ihrer Sicherheit von Linlithgow nach Stirling Castle und krönte sie dort am 9. September 1543 zur Königin . In 1547 wurde sie von ihrer Mutter nach Frankreich geschickt, wo sie aufwuchs und Francis heiratete. Francis wurde 1559 zum König gekrönt, verstarb aber schon in 1560. Ein Jahr später kam Mary zurück nach Schottland. Sie kam als Katholikin in ein Land, in dem die Reformation fast abgeschlossen war und sie kehrte als Fremde zurück, da sie in einer ganz anderen Kultur aufgewachsen war. Nach der kurzen, arrangierten Heirat mit Francis, heiratete sie zum zweiten Mal aus Liebe; ihren Cousin Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. Sie hatte einen Sohn mit ihm: James, der später James der VI von Schottland und I von England wurde. James kam am 19. Juni 1566 in Edinburgh Castle zur Welt und wurde in Stirling Castle getauft.

Lord Darnley war alles andere als eine gute Wahl als Ehemann. Er liess Mary's italienischen Sekretär vor ihren Augen in Holyrood Palace ermorden. Mary war zu diesem Zeitpunkt schwanger mit James.

Mary war in ihrer Zeit, die wahrlich weitest gereist Königin. Sie liebte Falkland Palace und spielte dort Tennis. Sie liebte Sport, sie ritt und spielte Golf in Musselburgh.

Lord Darnley wurde ermordet und als Mary zum dritten Mal heiratete, möglicherweise durch Vergewaltigung ueberzeugt, wurde sie verdächtigt an Lord Darnley's Ermordung beteiligt gewesen zu sein. Ihr dritter Man, James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, wurde von dem Verdacht freigesprochen. Für Mary führte dieser Verdacht unter anderem zu ihrer Abdankung in 1567.

Man hielt sie in Loch Leven Castle gefangen.Dort hatte sie eine Fehlgeburt von Zwilling und als sie sich erholt hatte, schwamm sie, der Sage nach, in ihre Freiheit. Leider nicht für lange. Nach einer verlorenen Schlacht gegen ihren Halbbruder Earl of Moray floh nach England. Dort wurde sie 19 Jahre gefangen gehalten und am 8. Oktober 1587 unter Befehl von Elisabeth I auf Fotheringham Castle geköpft.
