Falkland Palace

Falkland Palace

Perthshire to Fife

Visit 2 Castles in very different surroundings in Perthshire and the Kingdom of Fife, before spending an afternoon enjoying the coastal sights of St Andrews.

Leaving your accommodation, we drive first to Loch Leven and take the boat trip over to Loch Leven Castle.  The castle was built by Edward I, taken by William Wallace and then defended by subsequent Kings before Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner and forced to abdicate her throne to her 13-month old son, James. From here you can marvel at some of the wonderful scenery surrounding this Perthshire castle.

We then travel on to the historic village of Falkland with the classical Falkland Palace at its heart (If you watch Outlander, you may recognise this as a location for Inverness!). Tour the castle with its magnificent rooms, decorated and improved by the Stewarts since 1500 and visit one of the few Real Tennis Courts in Britain.

Time for lunch in one of the villages local eateries, before our drive to St Andrews.

Here you can visit the iconic First Tee at St Andrews Golf Course, with the obligatory photo opportunity to stand on the Swilken Bridge. We’ll also see the ruins of St Andrews Castle, the Cathedral, the University and enjoy some free time browsing in the picturesque village. Here’s as good a time as any for an ice-cream stop before we start your journey back to your accommodation!
