September Breaks in Scotland

Scotland is a joy to explore in September. With ample daylight hours and fewer crowds than in peak summer, it’s an ideal time for exploring small towns, countryside and coastline at a relaxed pace. We have heaps of inspiration to help you plan an enchanting September break spanning an array of unique events and activities, from food and book festivals to walking adventures and proud local traditions.

September in Wigtown and Stranraer

Early autumn is a rewarding time to visit Wigtown and Stranraer – especially for avid readers and discerning foodies. Nestled in the Dumfries and Galloway region, these small towns pack a major cultural punch, boasting a buzzing events calendar revolving around their rich literary heritage and unspoiled coastline.

The Bookshop in Wigtown

Find inspiration in Wigtown

The Wigtown Book Festival (25 September – 4 October) is one of the highlights of south-west Scotland’s autumn season. It’s a place where esteemed authors, journalists and thinkers gather for talks, discussions and workshops in venues across the town. Outside the festival events, take time to explore Wigtown’s many independent bookshops and galleries, before settling down in one of the town’s cafés where you can get lost in a good book.

Seafood feasts in Stranraer

Ever wanted to try oysters? Look no further than the Stranraer Oyster Festival. Set on the shores of Loch Ryan, it’s a chance to savour the area’s authentic coastal heritage with an oyster bar and other tantalisingly fresh seafood, local tipples and toe-tapping live music. Enjoy live cooking demos by celebrity chefs, tasting sessions, and the highlight of the day – the Scottish Oyster Shucking Championships.

The Mull of Galloway

Loch Ryan and the Rhins of Galloway

Loch Ryan is also the perfect stage for refreshing coastal walks and cycle routes this September. If you’re feeling more ambitious, take the opportunity to explore the wider Rhins of Galloway, a narrow south-west peninsula that extends from the south of Stranraer to the Mull of Galloway. Discover an area of quiet cliff-top paths, secret sandy bays and breathtaking sea views, dotted by characterful fishing villages like Port Logan and Portpatrick.

Autumnal delights in Oban and Lorn

Let’s head north to Argyll, where Oban and Lorn wait to be uncovered this autumn on Scotland’s west coast. Despite the seasonal shift, September is an excellent time to visit these coastal gems, as temperatures remain mild and the summer crowds start to ease. Discover communities in full swing with outdoor activities, shopping, museums and live music.

Castles, museums and whisky

Historic sites across Lorn remain fully open in September, making it a good time to explore castles and heritage attractions outside of the peak season. Start with Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel, an atmospheric medieval stronghold overlooking the Firth of Lorn. In Oban, there’s the Oban War & Peace Museum and Dunollie Castle which offer an insight into the town’s seafaring past and Highland culture, while Oban Distillery reveals story behind its signature West Highland malt.

Oban Chocolate Company

Shopping, live music and ceilidhs

Oban’s compact town centre is made for retail therapy with a host of independent shops, including galleries and gift shops such as Orsay Oban and Highland Glass, gourmand specialists including The Wee Wine Shop and Taste of Argyll where you can pick up local specialities such as Argyll-smoked salmon and artisanal preserves, and The Oban Chocolate Company. for handmade chocolates. The town also has a lively yet low-key live-music scene which you can enjoy at venues such as Corran Halls and pubs like The Lorne Bar and waterfront restaurant and ceilidh hot-spot The View Oban.

Get out on the water

September can still offer excellent conditions for sea kayaking, wildlife boat trips and diving. Step onboard with Oban Sea Tours and Puffin Dive Centre for wildlife encounters with seals, dolphins, porpoises and – if you’re lucky – the occasional whale, as well as cold-water diving experiences. For those looking to explore the wider Lorn coast, Seafari Adventures offers thrilling tours on their RIBs to the Corryvreckan Whirpool, while Sea Kayak Oban runs guided excursions around sheltered sea lochs and coastal waters, ideal for more leisurely paddles.

Guided walks and scenic countryside

September is a highlight of the walking calendar in the Borders, with the Scottish Borders Walking Festival offering a programme of guided walks across hills, valleys and historic routes. Walks vary in length and difficulty, making it an inclusive way too explore landscapes around Jedburgh, Peebles and the wider area.

Highland dancing competition

Traditional Highland games

Peebles Highland Games (5 September 2026) take place in the riverside setting of Hay Lodge Park on the banks of the River Tweed. Harking back to a time when Highland strongmen competed for the favour of the chieftain through tests of physical strength and athleticism, today’s event features many of these same contests, including the caber toss, shot put and hammer throw. Highland dancing and piping competitions complete the quintessentially Scottish spectacle.
